The Composting Network is working in conjunction with the City of New Orleans to assist with Hurricane Zeta debris removal.

Contractors have removed more than 72,261 cubic yards (cy) of vegetative debris, 4,444 hazardous leaning and hanging limbs and 94 damaged trees that have been ground into 14,754 cy of mulch that has been transported to The Composting Network. In addition, more than 8,900 cy of construction and demolition (C&D) debris has been removed from public rights of ways.

]]> The Composting Network partners with The City of New Orleans https://compostingnetwork.com/the-composting-network-partners-with-the-city-of-new-orleans/ Thu, 12 Apr 2018 06:37:37 +0000 https://www.compostingnetwork.com/?p=1102 On Saturday, April 14, 2018, the City of New Orleans Department of Sanitation kicked off its partnership with The Composting Network. The City will accept composting materials this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the City’s Recycling Drop-Off Center (2829 Elysian Fields Avenue) during its monthly drop-off event.

Beginning this Saturday, individual residents will be able to bring frozen food scraps to be composted by the Composting Network. The Composting Network will accept fruit and vegetable scraps (peels, skins, pits, or seeds), tea bags, coffee grounds including paper filters, eggshells, nutshells, seed shells, plain bread, grains, and plain pasta. The Network will not accept meat, dairy, bones, or foods with oil.

It has been an interesting year at The Composting Network, with highs such as the signing of the Whole Foods Market on Veterans Blvd and the DEQ naming us to the Louisiana Environmental Leadership Program; and lows such as some electric utilities not looking into power purchase agreements at “survivable” rates for digesters.

But all and all, in 2014, The Composting Network’s diversion of organics to composting and anaerobic digesting increased and surpassed its 2013 numbers. This upcoming year, we will release and train new recycling facilities in and outside of Louisiana on how to use our new custom software (www.WasteCollectionSoftware.com). We also have free composting service for restaurants, universities and businesses who sign up for our Compostable Purchasing Program. As more and more people become familiar with our services and its benefits, we anticipate remaining the largest composting collection facility in Louisiana.

Interview with Joseph Brock, Owner, New Orleans, Louisiana

How did you recognize a need for a food scraps collection service?

I started out with community gardens first. In New Orleans, community gardens — everyone was building them. But they weren’t building a sustainable way to maintain gardens and feed the plants. Lots of community gardens went out of business in one to two years. We wanted to create a sustainable model that would work. What came out of that was the need for finding a resource for low cost plant food. And so, I developed “The Composting Network” as a business model to work with restaurants because they had the bulk of the organic waste. The Composting Network, LLC, is one of the only composting facilities in Louisiana — we definitely saw a need for it here.
